General Guidelines

The Sims 2 Guidelines, apply in addition to the above General ones.
Body Shop - All
Some clothing meshes in Sims 2 come with a bmp file in the bodyshop projects package. It allows the illusion of depth to be added to a piece of clothing by creating a shadow version of parts of the outfit on this texture file. While a flat gray surface is preferable to a bumpmap done poorly, one well made can bring your clothing to life!
Bump Map: stdMatNormalMapTextureName.bmp - This is the bump map, if you have one, and applies the illusion of a 3D effect if your graphics card can view bump maps
It can add subtle detailing and shading to a piece of clothing, when applied correctly. Otherwise, it can make for some odd bumps and detailing on clothing in the wrong places :)
If making clothing on a computer that doesn't support viewing bumpmaps, it is best to leave the texture file a flat gray color instead of trying to apply one.
For more of an idea of what a bumpmap is, please see Bumpmap Tiptorial.
